Anastasia Art http://www.johnallenphoto.com/blog/2017/2/anastasia-art Coming up on March 2, 2017 is First Thursday at Anastasia & Friends Art Gallery down in Main Street here in sunny Columbia, South Carolina. Bohumila is planning a special show where all the art is inspired by Anastasia Chernoff, our friend who passed away last December.  Proceeds from the art show are going to Anastasia's memorial fund. I'm donating a 25" by 20" canvas I put together of public domain artwork as a mosaic of one of Anastasia's photos. Please come visit the gallery on First Thursday next month!

Cooking EdVentures http://www.johnallenphoto.com/blog/2017/2/cooking-edventures It's been a few months since I wrote here in the blog so today I thought I'd actually sit down and write a few things. I've been busy making art, working on projects, and now find myself involved in a new one which looks like it might tie me up for a while.  Cooking EdVentures is a new video series for EdVenture Children's Museum that I've been producing and directing. We had so much fun shooting the pilot episode (and EdVenture was so pleased with the results) that it looks like they are eager to do more with some sponsors. Not only were the kids amazing, but I'm also super happy that Jodi Paige of B106's Morning Show did our voice intro and end credits as well!

Chef Ashley and a few of the youth in her cooking class host an instructional cooking "show" of sorts where they prepare a recipe step-by-step until their meal is complete. Each episode is about 5 minutes long and is put together in a light-hearted format so you can follow along and learn how to cook as well. Guess what? You can also view our other video clips on my Vimeo account.

Another part of this program is that the food from the first episode was donated to the 153 Project, which feeds the hungry each Wednesday at Finlay Park here in Columbia, South Carolina. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor please contact Megan Galloway vie e-mail at: Megan@arcsc.org

The Milky Way http://www.johnallenphoto.com/blog/2016/10/the-milky-way The other weekend a group of us visited Helen, Georgia to see the alpine village and the beautiful countryside where we rented a mountain cabin in Sautee Nacoochee. I've been to Helen before, but I don't remember it having it that Myrtle Beach gift shop kitsch and literally I had no idea that the alpine village was “made up” to increase tourism back in the 1960's so I guess it worked as Oktoberfest is really quite the big deal there.

We built a fire a few nights back at the cabin. Campfires are fun. It wasn't until I walked away for a bit and looked up into the sky when I realized how great the view actually was. My friend Barry painted some of the trees with a smartphone in a few of the shots, but the interesting thing was what we found in two of them, a long horizontal streak going from the left to the right. It was a 30 second exposure and the only thing I can think of is that we captured either the International Space Station or some other kind of satellite in the night sky. You can also see the Milky Way in a few shots as well.

You can watch the interview below.

Taken from the Facebook event page:

Document(s) is a two part exhibit exploring different approaches to documentary photography in the digital medium. Pairing two different narratives with multiple approaches: Inundated and Soda Citizen are respectively comprised of photographs made last year during eight days of historic flooding in South Carolina and portraits of Columbia musicians during a four week period in 2016.The majority of Inundated was photographed by Rayford for Getty Images while covering the disaster for the international wire service. Soda Citizens is collection of photos with folks that the photographer met during his time at New Brookland Tavern, the live music venue in West Columbia.

Sean Rayford is a freelance photojournalist, commercial photographer, formal bartender and 2001 graduate of University of South Carolina. He covers news, politics and sport for The Associated Press, The New York Times and Getty Images. He has freelanced at The State Newspaper for more then a decade.

Rayford has also published a company book to the Inundated exhibit. All of the artist's proceeds from both collections in Document(s) and the book will go to the South Beltline/Gills Creek Comunity Relief Foundation. Many of the images made during the flood were made in that neighborhood.

First Thursday - September 2016 - Laura Garner http://www.johnallenphoto.com/blog/2016/9/firstthursdayseptember2016

So once I month I team up with Barry to shoot video interviews with local artists down at Anastasia & Friends on Main Street for First Thursday. This month it was with local artist, Laura Garner and you can read more about Laura's show below. Sorry I've been tied up with other things so I'm just getting to this now!

Taken from the Facebook event page:

Please join us for opening reception of "TopsyTurvy" a solo exhibition of works by Laura Garner.

LAURA GARNER

I was raised in the city of Columbia, South Carolina. For as long as I can remember, I have always had a fascination for all things odd, strange, old, beautiful, and insignificant ( well, depending on whose perspective). I love the visual arts, and always have. My deep-rooted appreciation and passion for the arts has found its voice through numerous media. Paint, charcoal, clay, assemblage, ink. Found objects. I love it all.

I’ve always made art and cannot imagine not making it. I remember being four; sitting on the kitchen floor and squinting at the fan-lights to make them blend; to be able to manipulate the colors and hue. I used to flip my doll-house upside down because it offered a whole other world. When I found tools that could help me do this; i.e. pencils, crayons, markers: I never looked back. Now the tools I use are more sophisticated, and my understanding and knowledge in the visual arts has vastly evolved. But the child-like wonder; the innocence of creating; is still and I hope will always be there.

I like the opposites of the world we live in. The grotesque nature of it. How everything is actually topsy- turvy. How marvelous it is, and how terrifying it can be. I like to think I can capture these moments and pockets through paintings and other forms of visual expression. What inspires me could be a dream, an emotion, a person, a landscape, a dead bird. There are so many strata in our world and I want to feel it all. Making art helps me feel it. It brings me closer.

I make up stories when I create. I name my subjects. I talk to my colors. Sometimes I even threaten my paintings. Sometimes I sing to them. I love them, and then I hate them. It makes each one really involved. Not a manufactured approach. Very personal and weird and…. Well, like a child at play really. When nobody’s watching and you’re free. I forever want to play. That is my art.

After receiving my BFA with a focus in Painting and a minor in Art History from the University of South Carolina in 2011, I moved to the city of Groningen in the Netherlands until 2013. I continued with my education by pursuing a Masters Program in the Restoration and Conservation of Easel Paintings with Accademia Riaci in Florence, Italy, and completed the program in the summer of 2014. My vision of pursuing a professional career in Conservation has manifested into a reality with my recent anniversary of one year of employment with Carolina Conservation in Columbia, South Carolina. The balance between doctoring old, worn, and seemingly forgotten objects in juxtaposition to creating my own work; new, infantile in comparison, and fresh from the imaginings of my own mind is, a contrast that influences my work greatly.

Meet Bohumila http://www.johnallenphoto.com/blog/2016/8/bohumila This was one of the most fun shoots I've had lately. Maybe it's because she and I are already friends, but nevertheless, we've been talking about getting together for a while. Basically, we took a bunch of images for some art projects I'm working on and decided to do a few extra ones as well.

I met Bohumila a few years ago to talk about doing some work together and after time we became pretty good friends and now share the same circle. You probably know her from the Columbia Museum of Art where she used to be the shop manager for quite a while. Not only that she's also an artist in her own right and she's well known for making custom designed jewelry. Bohumila moved here from Czech Republic many moons ago and you can usually find her at First Thursdays on Main Street where she can be seen hosting at local art gallery, Anastasia & Friends.

First Thursday - August 2016 - Dylan Fouste http://www.johnallenphoto.com/blog/2016/8/first-thursday---august-2016---dylan-fouste

Barry and I teamed up to interview local artist Dylan Fouste for the opening reception of "Time and a Place" at Anastasia & Friends. One of the things I like most about pitching in with this "series" we've sort of been doing is that I get to meet a lot of interesting people and see all the fun things that they do. Dylan does a lot of landscapes (which I like) and some pretty cool woodwork as well. Should you have missed First Thursday this week his art will be on display at the gallery for the rest of August. You can learn more about Dylan on Facebook at Fouste Manufacturing Co. and The Painted Fools Studio.

Taken from the Facebook event page:

Artist Bio

Born to the name of Dylan George Fouste, into a very history and art oriented household, I began drawing at an early age, taking notes from my mother's own early surrealist / representational style, all the while learning to value the history and stories of family from my father. Growing up in the farmlands of Illinois and Indiana, I have been exposed to vast landscapes all of my life, and now, after almost 20 years in South Carolina, I am finding that the similarities and differences in settings serve as a mirror for the changes in my own life, using texture and words to convey a sense of singularity along with the possibility of something better, while also touching on the history that connects us and is a part of us all.

Photoshoot with Karl L. Larsen http://www.johnallenphoto.com/blog/2016/6/photoshoot-with-karl-l-larsen I met Karl L. Larsen through some mutual friends a couple of years ago, probably out on First Thursdays down on Main Street here in sunny Columbia, South Carolina. You've probably seen him around town, he's also known for the Before I Die walls the last few years where people write their dreams and desires on a community wall.

One of the first things I remember about meeting Karl was that he had written a book about some of his life experiences after a car crash which affected him greatly. Anyone who knows me, or really knows me for that matter, knows I was almost killed in an accident when I was about 17 years old, but luckily all I broke was my leg and did some hospital and surgery time - it could have been much worse. Sometimes those incidents can make or break you as a person, the trauma, and the recovery...I have this in common with Karl as well as mutual friends and art etc.

Anyhow, Karl's going to do an art show up in New York City this week so we decided to shoot a few things before his journey.  He's also the only artist who's not a native New Yorker participating in this upcoming show. You can read more about his book called WANT on Facebook and there's a website where you can check out some of the things he's been up to.

Casa Loma won Featured and Won Contest Finalist in Viewbug's The Battle Of Professionals Photo Contest, June 2016

Viewbug is an international photo community that has competitions, awards, etc. from a wide range of people from enthusiasts all the way to professional photographers. Every now and then I upload images to my site there and see what happens. Location
I was on vacation in Canada to shoot a wedding actually and ended up visiting some of the local tourist attractions and Casa Loma is probably right at the top of the list for most people visiting Toronto. This was shot in the rear garden area.

Time
According to the file, this was shot in the afternoon around 2:30 PM.

Lighting
Well, there was a lot of cloud cover that day so that helped make the image a little more interesting than just plain old blue skies. Time of Day can be important depending on the look you want to achieve. I didn't really have that option so I went with what was available.

Equipment
Canon 6D and an ultra wide zoom lens, I think if memory serves a 17-40mm f/4 Canon L Lens. I had to do some profile corrections and in hindsight I probably would've used something else from further away, but this was what I had at the time.

Inspiration
Casa Loma is one of the coolest places to visit I can't imagine anyone not wanting to take a photo there. I've seen Casa Loma in the movies over the years...I know that it was in Strange Brew, X-Men, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, but down here in the Southeast (USA) everyone goes to the Biltmore Estate, which seems to have a similar function these days (tourism, movies, events, and etc). It was a no-brainer, besides they have a pretty cool military museum there as well.

Editing
Yes I used Lightroom combined with Photoshop to do all the editing. Mostly brush adjustments.

In my camera bag
Well I shoot professionally and some freelance fun as well so it depends on what I'm doing. If I'm out all day exploring I'll usually pack a Canon 6D, a 35 f/2 USM IS, a 70-200 f/4 USM IS L Lens, and a 17-40 f/4 L. I do a mix of studio work and I like going outdoors too so I'm all about keeping things light with f/4 zooms.

Feedback
Wait for good cloud coverage and time of day if possible, I always feel like when I see clear blue skies it's missing something. That being said framing helps and shooting a few extras wide so you can re-frame later is not a bad idea either. Rarely do I ever just take one photo, I'll shoot a bunch and pick the best to work with.

So my friend Barry and I came back from Artfields' late on Sunday and literally went right back out to shoot some video for this week's upcoming show at Anastasia & Friends featuring the artwork of Marius Valdes. Should be a fun show and we expect quite a crowd. Enjoy the video, this article will be updated after First Thursday.

ARTFIELDS: 2016 Finale Video from ARTFIELDS on Vimeo.

Had a great time this year at Artfields, it was a honor to be accepted and featured in the Jones-Carter gallery. Having got there a little bit late that Saturday afternoon I missed the voting registration and didn't get to see all the work on display, but a bunch of friends showed up and made the visit all the more fun and worthwhile as some of them have never experienced Artfields' before. Here's the finale video they displayed on the green after the closing speech before the winners were announced and the fireworks display. If you look through the video carefully, you'll see my entry, "Behind the Scenes of the Soda City Cirque" at around 3:47 into the video. Hope to see you again Artfields!

The Ringmaster - Alexis Doktor Designs http://www.johnallenphoto.com/blog/2016/3/the-ringmaster So Alexis Doktor and I have been talking a while about doing a creative photo shoot that could also serve as a commercial shoot for her website located at www.alexisdoktor.com.  Alexis is a costumer and designs all sorts of incredible clothing including, but not limited to theatrical wardrobe.  Last Saturday seemed like the perfect time to do a really fun and interesting photo shoot with so many of the costumes she had designed on loan from the various theater groups. I don't know how many she had on hand, but I would have to guess at least fifty some odd outfits. There were so many costumes laying around, I wasn't quite sure where I was anymore!

Our original idea was called "The Ringmaster".  Alexis stood in front of a rack of her own creations in the guise of an old fashioned Circus Ringmaster.  We also shot casual wear images and some scenes where we spread all of the costumes on the floor carefully for some black and white images in one of her dresses.

First Thursday - Friends for Anastasia http://www.johnallenphoto.com/blog/2016/3/FriendsforAnastasia First Thursday brought in quite the crowd despite the weather and rain to pay tribute to Anastasia Chernoff’s birthday with an outpouring of love during her time of healing. The event was called "Friends for Anastasia" and it certainly was that. I might be mistaken, but I don’t recall a time where I saw so many people gather together during bad weather in the last couple of years on a First Thursday. It actually became so crowded people were sitting behind the wine bar just to have some breathing space and it was even more surprising when Anastasia showed up with a big smile on her face, happy to see everyone.

There was a wide variety of work on display including paintings, mixed-media, photographs, poetry and literature. One of the best things about attending First Thursdays is I get to sit back and watch my friends take care of business. Alexis and Alice were helping set up the food as Bohumila made her rounds with Grayson handling visitors and sales. And of course as per usual my neighbor, the Wine Goddess handled…the wine, which she does very well. All of the wine sold out by nine o'clock...after all First Thursday is a wine drinking crowd.

L-Hoff a.k.a. The Larsenhoff was also there doing his usual schtick.

At least nine pieces of artwork sold before the show had even begun. By the way I want to thank Tori for purchasing my Gervais Street Bridge on canvas (16x24). She told me she normally hates photos of the Gervais Street Bridge, but she liked mine so much she had to buy it…obviously, I am beyond flattered. Anyhow, I had a great time last evening and I'm pretty sure everyone else did too.

When you see that many people get together in honor of someone you can’t help but feel the sense of community that the arts crowd has in this city. I consider myself lucky to be friends with many of these wonderful people and to have met them here at Anastasia & Friends, located in front of The Free Times office on Main Street.

Starry Night http://www.johnallenphoto.com/blog/2016/3/starry-night One of my favorite things to do is astrophotography, which I don't get to do often because the light pollution is quite bad locally and in fact...it's pretty bad anywhere near metropolitan areas unless you go further into the countryside, but this quick weekend getaway out in the West Virginia mountains gave me a perfect chance to try my hand at it again. This was shot around midnight outside our cabin near Mt. Hope, West Virginia while my friends were inside enjoying the fire. I didn't take many photographs with my DSLR on this trip as it was mainly for fun, but this is the one I will remember most.
